Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic options as it boasts cosmetic and functional benefits, as well as effective results for patients undergoing treatment. Of course the goal of undergoing orthodontics is to eventually achieve a great smile, but Invisalign is one of the rare treatments that allow patients’ smiles to be uninterrupted throughout treatment due to the transparent and removable aligners, which are barely noticeable by the naked eye.
What you have to look forward to with Invisalign
1. Enjoy special events while working towards a great smile
Whether it’s a formal, wedding or business event, or even just a birthday party, you will have the freedom to remove your aligners. Of course Invisalign aligners are transparent so you can also wear these for special events but many people like to wear no aligners for the assurance that they will not show up in photos.
Of course you will still need to comply with treatment for a majority of the time for treatment to be effective. It is recommended that you wear your Invisalign retainers for 22 hours per day.
2. Your diet will not be dictated by your orthodontic treatment
One of the most negative aspects of receiving orthodontic treatment with metal braces is the food which you may have to give up. The great thing about Invisalign is that you can remove your aligners to have a snack and then simply rinse or brush your teeth before re-inserting your aligners. Braces are not removable so you will not have this freedom.
Some foods which braces can limit include: Chewy foods, foods that stain and hard foods. This means that hard lollies, tomato sauce, coffee, nuts and hard bread may compromise your treatment and should be avoided with braces.
3. Your risk of bad breath and bad hygiene is not significantly increased
Braces can entrap plaque and food debris and make them difficult to brush and floss away. This in turn increases your risk of cavities, tooth decay and bad breath which can be painful or embarrassing.
Invisalign is extremely easy to clean and you can choose to soak your aligners in mouthwash or simply brush them or rinse them with toothpaste and water. You will also remove your aligners to eat and it is also recommended that you brush your teeth before re-inserting your aligners, so that no debris is stuck beneath your aligners.
Are there any drawbacks to Invisalign?
When compared to your other options for straighter teeth, the impacts are minimal. However, some people may need to adjust to speaking with Invisalign and you may experience some minimal soft tissue irritation.
